Are you ready to go… really go? Naviguru can help with summer commissioning and operations!
We don’t want your engine to lose its cool over the summer. Summer operations require a proper commissioning checkout! Here are a few things to know and check at commissioning:
Your engine uses several components to keep it cool while it is running. Making sure there is good sea water flow is key. That means checking any outside strainers for obstructions or paint that is too thick, making sure the sea strainer is clean, and making sure the sea water pump has a fresh impeller, and components that aren’t too worn. Water pump cover plates, impellers, and cams are meant to wear as they get older and eventually they don’t make a good enough seal to pump well.
From the pump, the next place the water goes is the heat exchanger if the engine is freshwater-cooled. Antifreeze circulates within the engine block and sea water cools the antifreeze inside the heat exchanger. Heat exchangers can become clogged with old zincs, pieces of impeller, and calcium. They can be inspected and cleaned to improve their flow. Antifreeze can also lose its effectiveness over time and should be checked and replaced as needed. Some engines have various other coolers for transmissions, fuel, and intake air that can be checked.
Leaving the heat exchangers, the sea water enters the exhaust elbow where it mixes with the hot exhaust gases to help cool the exhaust hosing. Because exhaust elbows exist in such a challenging environment, it is important to inspect them regularly to be sure they don’t have internal or external damage that could inhibit water flow or allow exhaust gases to escape. Direct sea water cooled engines don’t have heat exchangers, the sea water travels right through the block, exhaust manifolds, and exhaust. Since sea water is more corrosive than antifreeze, all those items need regular inspection. Either type of engine utilizes thermostats in the antifreeze or sea water to help regulate engine temperature.
Naviguru is happy to check over your engine’s cooling components, make recommendations, and perform any needed service. We can also set you up with a Turnkey Service Plan to ensure that your boat is ready to leave the dock when you are! Just give us a call or schedule an appointment and we’ll get right back to you!
